Personal Identification

  • Driver's License or Government -Issued ID
  • Social Security Cards (or ITINs) for all household members


Income Documents

  • W-2 Forms- Reports income from employment and taxes withheld.                  
  • 1099 Forms-(e.g. 1099-NEC,1099-K, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV)- Reports income from freelance work, contract jobs, bank interest, dividends, or other sources.
  • Unemployment Income (Form 1099-G)- Documents unemployment benefits received.
  • Social Security Income (SSA-1099)- Reports benefits from Social Security.
  • Pension/Retirement Income (1099-R)- Details distributions from retirement accounts.
  • Alimony Received  (If applicable)-Only divorces finalized before 2019.

Deduction & Credit Documents

  •  Mortgage Interest Statement (Form 1098)- Used to deduct mortgage interest.
  • Property Tax Statements- For deduction of real estate taxes.
  • Charitable Donation Receipts- Include dates, amounts, and organization names.
  • Medical Expenses & Insurance Premiums- Receipts if itemizing deductions.
  • Education Expenses (Form 1098-T and receipts)- Needed for education credits like the American Opportunity or Lifetime Learning Credit.
  • Student Loan Interest (Form 1098-E)- Used to claim a deduction for student loan interest.
  • Childcare Expenses (including provider info and amount paid)-For the Child and Dependent Care Credit.

Health Insurance Information

  • Form 1095-A, 1095-B, or 1095-C-Proof of health coverage and marketplace premium tax credit details.

Business or Self-Employment Records

  • Income and Expense Records- Spreadsheets, receipts, mileage logs, etc.
  • 1099-NEC or 1099-K forms- For freelance or contractor work.
  • Business Asset Purchases or Depreciation Schedules- If applicable for deductions.

Investment or Real Estate Documents

  • Year- End Brokerage Statements (1099-B, 1099-DIV, etc.)- For stock sales, dividends, and interest income.
  • Rental Income and Expenses- Include mortgage statements, repair receipts, and tenant income logs.

Prior Year Tax Return

  • Last Year's Tax Return- Helpful for carryover, depreciation schedules, and consistency.

  • For faster refund processing.
